Product Information
Description
Square shoulder milling cutters allow for a true 90° cut, combining peripherial milling with face milling. It is ideal for slotting. This square shoulder end mill has a 5/8" cutting diameter, 5/8" shank and is 3 1/4" in over length. It uses two standard APKT-1003 indexable inserts.
APKT-1003 carbide coated inserts are an excellent alternative to HSS for heavy material removal.
Chris' Tips
Carbide cutting tools are a hard composite material , primarily tungsten carbide, bonded with cobalt. They can withstand extreme temperatures (up to 1,000° C) and heavy mechanical loads without losing their hardness.
Many of our carbide inserts are coated, typically with TiN (Titanium Nitride). This coating reduces friction and improves wear resistance.
Carbide indexable inserts save money since only the insert, not the entire cutting tool, needs to be made of carbide. However, when compared to solid carbide or high-speed steel (HSS), they are slightly less rigid. They can be prone to cutting pockets in your stock if the edge breaks. It is this quality which drives many of our customers to our T-15 high-speed steel made in the USA.
Make sure you get the correct inserts and retaining screws for your indexable turning tools.
Our chart of indexable inserts shows which inserts and which screw to use with each of our indexable tools.
