Product Information

Description

This industrial die holder goes in the tailstock of the mini lathe, or any other lathe with a 2 Morse taper tailstock. It has a short Morse taper for the mini lathe so you may need to put a ball bearing or such like behind it so it will eject from lathes that expect a standard length taper.
The arbor is made of steel. The body is aluminum for low mass, so it spins easily when you release it. This prevents small parts from twisting off.
This lathe die holder tool does not work with hexagonal dies. Hexagonal dies are not made for creating new threads, they are for maintenance work.

Chris's Tips

Put the tapered arbor in the tailstock and position (and lock) the tailstock so that the die is just off the end of the workpiece.

Turn on the lathe at slow speed.

Grab the knurled body of the die holder and move it into the workpiece. As the die threads the workpiece, the body slides on the arbor.

When you reach the end of the area you want threaded, simply let go of the body and it will start turning with the workpiece.

The tommy bar is used for larger threads and can be set on top of the compound. You will probably have to turn the lathe chuck by hand as mini lathes don't have enough torque.
